Speakers Bill Buchanan and Richard Demarco provided insight in two thirty minute presentations, answering a number of audience questions afterwards.

The topic under discussion was Building a World-leading City in Arts & Science which provided for lively discussion, and the presentation of a number of radical ideas to improve the city both from an artistic persepctive and for future development based on digital innovation.

On 30th April 2018, two of Edinburgh’s most innovative and acclaimed figures in the Arts and Science will meet on stage for the first time together to discuss the future of the city.

Introduced by The Lord Provost of Edinburgh Frank RossProfessor Richard Demarco CBE and Professor Bill Buchanan OBE will discuss and debate the future of Edinburgh, both in terms of its “Digital New Town” and the city’s artistic and cultural life, and will raise challenges for the residents, students, politicians and figures in the arts and sciences to ask what needs to be done, and what engagements, investments, conversations and critical thinking is needed to make Edinburgh a world-leading city once again.

Devised by David Petherick of LinkedInLocal Edinburgh, this inaugural talk will be followed by an interview with ‘The Two Professors’, followed by what promises to be a lively Question and Answer session open to the 200-strong audience.

A series of talks to discuss the future of Edinburgh is already being planned: this event is the catalytic firestarter.

The venue is the spectacular ‘Egg’ building, formally known as Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre at Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus. Invitations to attend are being extended to the citizens of Edinburgh from all walks of life. The intention is to have a melting pot of Edinburgh in the room: the student in dialogue with the local politician, artist, programmer, lawyer, clerk, pensioner, entrepreneur and simple citizen of this city.

The Topics and Speakers

Topics:

Bill Buchanan: Rebuilding the New Town: This time it's virtual

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful and cultured cities in the world, and has one of the most educated and enterprising workforces of any city. It has a fairly unique ecosystem which supports innovation and collaboration.

Bill will outline the strengths of the city and the opportunities that exist within Computer Science, especially around areas such as Blockchain, AI and Fintech applications. But he will also outline the risks that the city faces, and the challenges that hold it back from being truly defined as a smart city. For this he will propose new ways of engaging with citizens and businesses, and to use data to drive innovation.

The architectures of the New Town in Edinburgh built an amazing landscape for the future. This time the city has the chance to build new foundations, and this time they will be build on software. Along the way he will show how Art and Computer Science can fuse together in these new worlds.

Richard Demarco: What in Edinburgh’s artistic & cultural history are key markers for its future?

How many people know that Edinburgh is twinned with Florence and with Krakow? How many are aware, therefore, of an Anglo-Italo cultural dialogue and a Anglo-Polish cultural dialogue fostered by the reality of these cities which are among the few which express the cultural heritage of Europe through their very physical presence and their unique nature in terms of their cultural identity and their seats of learning?

How many people know why Ian Hamilton Finlay chose to define his sculptural masterpiece of a philosopher’s garden in the Lanarkshire hills as ‘Little Sparta’? He chose this name in direct response to Edinburgh’ proud title ‘The Athens of the North’.

How many people can remember the Edinburgh Festival when it was not regarded as a money-making machine? How many can remember Edinburgh when it was possible to live and work in a dignified manner in Edinburgh’s Old Town? How many agree with me that the greatest imaginable blessing was conferred upon Edinburgh and its citizens when a small group of friends decided that it should be the ‘world capital of culture’?

What should I do with my memories of every single Edinburgh Festival?

Speakers:

About Bill Buchanan

About Richard Demarco

Like Joseph Beuys, I would define my art as my teaching. I am a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, having studied Mural Painting, Book Illustration, Book Binding, Printmaking, as well as Life Drawing and Painting.

Two years National Service in The King’s Own Scottish Borderers and The Royal Army Education Corps caused me to realise that the art world was far removed from that of the soldier preparing for the experience of the Korean War.

School-teaching on primary and secondary levels at Scotus Academy working alongside Arthur Oldham, the Scotus Music Master and founder of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, taught me that the visual and performing arts are inseparable and that they are both at one with the literary world.

I have no qualifications other than that of a school teacher, but now I have seven honorary doctorates from seven universities. I firmly believe that art is the one language that we can use to express our love of life and indeed our capacity to love and to express friendship and our most profound hopes and aspirations. It is the one language which a teacher must take seriously.

Around 37 people gathered together for the first ever LinkedIn Local Edinburgh event. With free food and drink provided courtesy of Venue hosts 24 Royal Terrace Hotel, this was an intimate, enjoyable and educational event.

One of the main purposes of the evening was to gather ideas and inspiration for the shape, frequency, content and size of future LinkedIn Local Edinburgh events, and guests spent 20 minutes or so discussing ideas and recording their responses to a 3-page survey, which the hosts will be using to map out future events.

LinkedIn Local Edinburgh is designed to react to local demand, rather than impose pre-formulated formats or types of events, and will continuously request feedback and input from local LinkedIn members.

Speakers Mike McGrail and Connie McLaughlin provided insight in two short presentations, answering a slew of questions afterwards, and three lucky local LinkedIn members walked away with prizes including a free stay for 2 at 24 Royal Terrace Hotel, a free LinkedIn Profile Surgery from Doctor LinkedIn, and a free Professional Headshot session from Professional Headshots Scotland.

During the evening, guests also enjoyed a guided art tour of the Hotel conducted by artist and teacher Roza Nazipova and had a sneak look inside one or two rooms. They also enjoyed taking part in an online interactive quiz, voting on their phones for the chance to win a stay at the hotel.
